HDD vs. SSD: What’s the Difference?

If you are going to buy new Laptop, you should always check specifications in terms of processor, RAM and storage drive like HDD or SSD and how much storage space you really need in coming few years. These things matter when you are going to procure new Laptop or Desktop Computers. But people are confused between HDD and SSD as how it is going to affect the overall performance of the Laptop.

WD 500 GB Laptop HDD

HDD [Hard Disk Drive]:

The traditional spinning hard drive is essentially a metal platter with a magnetic coating that stores your data. The read /Write performance of HDD is 40 to 50 Mbps. If you have large data size it will take more time to copy on the hard drive. Now Companies like WD, Seagate and Toshiba produce hard drive at the economical rate. You will get it around Rs. 3500 to 4000 for WD 500GB HDD.  HDD is the mechanical device and it has moving parts because of that it produced noise when its running.

SSD [Solid State Drive]:

Samsung 500 GB SSD

SSD uses flash memory instead of mechanical and moving parts. SSD is faster and expensive compared to other storage drives. It is a fast and secure drive. There are no moving parts available on SSD so it works silently and no any type of data loss problem or drive corrupt problem. The best part of SSD is the read/write speed 500mbps which are ten times more than HDD drives. You could pop out a 2.5-inch / 3.5-inch hard drive from your laptop or desktop easily and replace it with high-performance SSD. An SSD is available in two different interfaces: SATA or PCIe.

HDD vs. SSD

HDD and SSD do the same job. they boot your system and sore your personal files and applications but SSD has its own unique features. Why they do differ and you should replace your hard drive with SSD??

Price: SSD is more expensive than traditional Hard drive in terms of INR per GB. A 500 GB laptop hard drive costs between Rd. 3500 to 4000 but as of now an SSD of same capacity starts at Rs. 15000/-

Speed: An SSD-equipped Laptop or Desktop will boot in less than a minute, and often in just a few seconds. A hard drive requires time to speed up to operating systems and will continue to be slower than an SSD during normal use.

Durability: An SSD has no moving parts, so it keeps your data safe in the eventually you drop your laptop bag while it’s operating. If you’re rough on your Laptop, an SSD is recommended for you.

Noise: SSD doesn’t make noise at all since they’re non-mechanical.

Power: SSD doesn’t consume power so you will better Laptop battery life.

The Storage of Tomorrow

It is clear that SSDs will totally replace traditional spinning hard drives.
